In only 2 years, from March 2000 when London Eye was opened to public, until July 2002, the world's biggest Ferris wheel at that time had been ridden by over 8 million people. Since its opening, the London Eye has become a major iconic landmark of both London and the United Kingdom. In fact, it is currently the most visited attraction to pay for in the UK. So, if you're in London, make sure you don't miss the spectacular view of the city from this impressive observation wheel called the London Eye.
A flight in a London Eye capsule is definitely a unique and impressive experience. But, you can make it even better if you take one of the London Eye's special flights, such as the Champagne Flight which is suitable for couples and small groups and it includes a free in-flight mini guide and priority fast track boarding. And if you take your children too, that's not a problem either, because they will be served non-alcoholic drinks, even if it's called a champagne flight.
Another thrilling experience while riding in London Eye, are the sunset and night flights, available until 9.30pm on Friday and Saturday evenings and until 9.00pm from Sunday to Thursdays, which will provide you with the most amazing view on London, with all its fantastic landmarks.
Facts about London Eye
- It is also known as the Millennium Wheel and it's officially named Merlin Entertainments London Eye.
- It is located in Central London, on the South Bank of the River Thames, Lambeth, London.
- Its construction was completed in 1999 and until 2006, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world.
- When you are at the top of the wheel, you can see around approximately 40 kilometres.
- The wheel is made up of 32 capsules and each of them weighs 10 tonnes.
- How long does it take to get to the top of the London Eye? Well, a ride is 30 minutes long to reach the wheel's height of 135 metres.
- The chances to be queued up for a ride are higher on school holidays, Bank holidays, weekends and from July to August. These are the busiest periods for a London Eye flight, especially between 11:00am and 3:00pm.
- A capsule can host up to 28 people, however, there must be at least 3 adults on each ride.
- Since its grand opening in 2000, London Eye was awarded 75 times for national and international tourism.
